Under Armour's first innovation was on the football field when the company starting selling compression-fitting shirts to be worn under the players' pads in extreme conditions of hot or cold weather. 1996 seems like lifetime ago once you see the evolution of the football uniform that players wear today. "MPZ" stands for Maximum Protection Zones and it represents the most technical impact top and shorts anywhere. Worn by elite players at every competitive level, including the NFL, these styles utilize EVA foam in the exact areas where collisions occur most on the field. Check out more images...
I was challenged to reinvent the MPZ Top and Short for Spring/ Summer 2011. I wanted it reflect the speed and power that are characteristics of the best and most feared football players. My inspiration was the most terrorizing fish in the ocean- the Great White Shark. I took design cues from not only the fluid shape of the fish but also the intricate shark skin which helps reduce drag in the water. Aside from the protection that the EVA foam provides, the MPZ Impact top has ArmourGrip on the chest and sleeves that locks down the shoulder pads close to the body so that the equipment and player can function without distractions.
